Untapped Reserves 2.0: Driving Gender Balance in Oil & Gas

Representing roughly a fifth of employees in the oil and gas industry, women account for a significantly smaller share of the workforce than they do in almost any other sector. These women also work disproportionately in office jobs; they have a very limited presence both in technical roles, which are often considered prerequisites for career advancement, and in upper management. The upshot: oil and gas companies are failing to fully leverage a potentially sizable and critical pool of talent.

This survey is intended to provide a comprehensive snapshot of gender balance in the oil and gas industry today, and identify progress made since the baseline study in 2017.

Dear colleagues,

In the current crisis the world and our Oil & Gas industry are facing, the World Petroleum Council and Boston Consulting Group are joining forces to send one clear message: Diversity & Inclusion matters even more

  • we are asking more to our teams, we are asking them to do the extra mile on an daily basis with constrained resources
  • we need to continue preparing future Oil & Gas Leaders, leveraging on the existing talents we have within our respective organizations and as an overall Industry

In an uncertain world, we know for sure having a company purpose and trustworthy Leaders will make a difference even more

At the industry and at each company level, this means adding the Diversity & Inclusion strategic management to the CEO agenda to maximize value creation. We do believe outstanding performances come from team members who feel included in a respectful and transparent way, in all their diversity.

We decided to take a closer look at gender diversity to measure the progress our industry has made since we launched three years ago the first global database on Diversity & Inclusion in Oil & Gas.
